The Quasar Sdss J105041.35+345631.3: Black Hole Recoil or Extreme Double-peaked Emitter?

چکیده
The quasar SDSS J105041.35+345631.3 (z = 0.272) has broad emission lines blueshifted by 3500 km s relative to the narrow lines and the host galaxy. Such an object may be a candidate for a recoiling supermassive black hole, a binary black hole, a superposition of two objects, or an unusual geometry for the broad emission-line region (BLR). The absence of narrow lines at the broad line redshift argues against superposition. New Keck spectra of J1050+3456 place tight constraints on the binary model. The combination of large velocity shift and symmetrical Hβ profile, as well as aspects of the narrow line spectrum, make J1050+3456 an interesting candidate for black hole recoil. Other aspects of the spectrum suggest an extreme case of a double-peaked emitter. We discuss possible observational tests to determine the true nature of this exceptional object. The Quasar Sdss J1536+0441: an Unusual Double-peaked Emitter
The quasar SDSS J153636.22+044127.0, exhibiting peculiar broad emission-line profiles with multiple components, was proposed as a candidate sub-parsec binary supermassive black hole system. More recently, imaging revealed two spatially distinct sources, leading some to suggest the system to be a quasar pair separated by ∼5 kpc. We present Palomar and Keck optical spectra of this system from whi...
متن کاملThe Quasar Sdss J153636.22+044127.0: a Double-peaked Emitter in a Candidate Binary Black-hole System
Double-peaked emission lines are believed to be originated from accretion disks around supermassive black holes (SMBHs), and about 3% of z < 0.33 AGNs are found to be double-peaked emitters. The quasar SDSS J153636.22+044127.0 has recently been identified with peculiar broad-line emission systems exhibiting multiple redshifts. We decompose the Hα and Hβ profiles into a circular Keplerian disk l...
متن کاملDouble Quasars: Probes of Black Hole Scaling Relationships and Merger Scenarios
We analyze the available sample of double quasars, and investigate their physical properties. Our sample comprises 85 pairs, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We derive physical parameters for the engine and the host, and model the dynamical evolution of the pair. First, we compare different scaling relationships between massive black holes and their hosts (bulge mass, velocity...
متن کاملThe Assembly of Supermassive Black Holes at High Redshifts
The supermassive black holes (SMBHs) massive enough (& few×10M⊙) to power the bright redshift z ≈ 6 quasars observed in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) are thought to have assembled by mergers and/or gas accretion from less massive “seed” BHs. If the seeds are the ∼ 10M⊙ remnant BHs from the first generation of stars, they must be in place well before redshift z = 6, and must avoid being ej...
متن کاملDiscovery of Radio Emission from the Quasar Sdss J1536+0441, a Candidate Binary Black-hole System
The radio-quiet quasar SDSS J1536+0441 shows two broad-line emission systems that Boroson & Lauer interpret as a candidate binary black-hole system with a separation of 0.1 pc (0.02 mas). From new VLA imaging at 8.5 GHz, two faint sources, separated by 0.97 (5.1 kpc), have been discovered within the quasar’s optical localization region. Each radio source is unresolved, with a diameter of less t...
